The Hybrid Athlete · 12-Week Programme

Built like a bodybuilder, moves like an athlete.

A hybrid programme for lifters past forty who want to keep the size and get the movement back. Real strength, paired session by session with the bodyweight skill that proves it works.

01

The forties trade-off, undone

You spent years getting bigger, and somewhere along the way the body got tighter, the shoulders got louder, and all that strength stopped carrying over to anything athletic. The usual advice says to shrink down to move better. This does the opposite. We keep the muscle you worked for and teach it to move, so the physique in the mirror is one you can actually use, well past forty.

02

The method: transfer pairs

Every block in your week is a pair. A loaded bodybuilding lift builds the raw strength, then the calisthenics movement it feeds into turns that strength into skill and control. You feel the link in the same session, and that link is the whole point.

Bodybuilding
Bench Press
Build raw pressing strength under load.
Calisthenics
Archer Push-up
Own that strength through your own bodyweight.
Bodybuilding
Lat Pulldown
Groove the pulling pattern with controlled load.
Calisthenics
Pull-up
Carry yourself, clean and strict, on the bar.
Bodybuilding
Back Squat
Load the legs and build serious base strength.
Calisthenics
Pistol Squat
Express it on one leg, balanced and in control.

Twelve weeks, three phases

The programme moves with you. Each four-week phase raises the load on the lifts and climbs one rung on the skills, so the bench that built your push-up is soon driving an archer, and the squat behind your first assisted pistol is soon behind a full one.

WEEKS 1–4

Foundation

Learn the pairings, sit on the achievable rung of each skill, and build the mobility base that protects the joints.

WEEKS 5–8

Build

Add load and volume, and climb a rung on every skill as the strength starts to show up in your movement.

WEEKS 9–12

Progress

Peak the lifts and express the skills cleanly. This is where the full pull-up, dip and pistol arrive.

What coaching includes

  • The full 12-week Hybrid Athlete programme, delivered through your coaching app with every set, rep, tempo and coaching note in place.
  • Skill levels set to you. Each bodyweight movement starts at the rung you can own today, then climbs as you earn it.
  • A structured weekly check-in with a video review from me, so you always know what is working and what comes next.
  • Nutrition that starts sensible and adjusts with your progress rather than starving you into a corner.
  • Direct access to me between sessions, online or in person, for the questions that come up mid-week.
Who it's for

The 40-plus lifter who has built a real physique and wants it to perform: healthy shoulders, hips and knees, control of his own bodyweight, and strength that turns up in life and sport rather than sitting idle in the mirror. If you refuse to trade size for movement as you get older, this was built for you.

Questions before you start

Straight answers

You do not need to arrive athletic. You need a willingness to train consistently, communicate honestly, and progress from the level you can control today.

Am I too old for this? My joints have seen better days.
That's exactly who I built it for. The whole thing is designed around a body with some miles on it, which is why every session finishes with mobility work and why each skill starts at a level you can genuinely control. We climb rung by rung rather than throwing you in at the deep end. Most guys find the aches they've been carrying start to settle as their movement cleans up.
Do I need to already do calisthenics or bang out pull-ups?
Not at all. Every bodyweight movement has a ladder behind it, and you start on whichever rung you can own today. If a full pull-up is a way off, you begin with the assisted version and work up from there. The programme meets you where you are.
Will I lose size doing all the movement work?
No, and this is the bit most lifters get wrong. The heavy bodybuilding lifts are still the backbone of every session, so the size-building never goes anywhere. The calisthenics sits on top to make that muscle actually perform, not to replace the training that built it.
What equipment do I need?
A fairly standard gym covers it: a barbell, dumbbells, a bench, a pull-up bar and somewhere to dip. The bodyweight and movement work needs little more than floor space, so a decent home setup runs most of it without trouble.
How much time does it take?
Four sessions a week, each landing around the hour mark. It's laid out so you train with purpose rather than living in the gym, which matters when you've got work and a life around it.
How's it delivered?
Everything runs through your coaching app, with every session, set, rep and coaching note laid out for you. You send a structured check-in each week and I come back with a short video on what's working and what we adjust. You follow a plan, you don't guess.
Do I have to crash diet?
No. We start you at sensible, maintainable eating and adjust from there based on your goal and how you're responding. The aim is a way of eating you can live with, not something you white-knuckle for twelve weeks.
Online or in person?
Both. Most people run it online through the app wherever they train, and if you're local I coach it in person too. Same programme either way.
What does it cost, and how do I start?
Book an intro call and we'll talk through where you're at and what fits. I'd rather point you at the right level than sell you the priciest one. That call is also where we map out your first phase.

Big, strong, and able to move.

That is the version of yourself this programme builds. Tell me where you are now and where you want to be, and we will map the route together.
